The Milwaukee Brewers opened the spring half of their season with an impressive 8-0 Mother’s Day drubbing of Madison’s D&S Soccer Club.
Although muddy conditions made crisp and concise play difficult, the Brewers quickly took control of the game. In only the ninth minute forward Christian Shanower took the ball down the line and laid off a nice pass to Peter Schreiber, who did his part in making a couple of nifty moves to bypass a defender and the goalie, before passing it into the empty net.
The dynamic duo of Shanower and Shreiber would continue to harass the hapless D&S defense, combining for six goals and two assists over the course of the convincing onslaught.
Other game highlights included several sublime passes and assists by midfielder Drew Bickman, Adam Ilecki’s jersey muddying diving header goal, as well as a stunning slide tackle and overall solid play from defender Mike Gnacinski.
Although not tested often, goalkeeper Nick Gundrum came through with a couple of clutch saves, to preserve the shutout. “I would like to dedicate this shutout victory to my mama,” said a teary-eyed Gundrum, just moments after the whistle brought the impressive Brewer effort to a satisfying end.
